Selby Business Show at Carlton Towers is just the job
SELBY entrepreneurs have hailed the town's second business show, held at Carlton Towers, a success.
Thirty-five exhibitors had stalls at the event on Tuesday, while around 100 visitors turned up despite the cold, rainy weather.
The Selby Times had a strong presence at the show, with editor Chris Page and a team of merchandisers supporting the event.
Exhibitors who bought a copy of the newspaper were given a free England car flag, a Selby Times branded pen and the chance to win a quarter-page advertisement.
Selby Chamber of Commerce chairman Geoff Gordon said: "There have been some real quality inquiries, enabling exhibitors and attendees to spend quality time together talking and leading, in some cases, to orders being placed.
"We chose Carlton Towers because it's such a prestigious venue. We limited the number of exhibitors so that they could all have good space and that has paid off."
Mr Gordon said that the atmosphere of the Selby Business Show was "smashing, really buzzing".
He added that everyone had said it was a really good venue and he hoped the event would return there in the future.
There were two seminars held at the event, one by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and another by Business Link dispensing general advice.
A number of people also won prizes in the casino that was present at the event, complete with a real roulette wheel.
Mr Gordon, who runs SWAT Security in the town, said Selby's business community was upbeat about the tasks ahead, but conceded it was "not going to be easy".
Mr Gordon believed Selby's businesses could weather any storm as long as they stayed positive and made no panic decisions.
"We don't know what's going to happen, we've got to wait and see how events unfold with the new government. It's probably not going to become clear until later in the year.
"But my advice is to be prepared – don't start kneejerk reactions."
Selby Times editor Chris Page said: "The second Selby Business Show was a first class event, further cementing our close co-operation with Selby Chamber and reinforcing our continued support for local trade and commerce as the area's premier paper for 150 years."
