CHURCH Fenton’s Wildlife Habitat Protection Trust based in Church Fenton have created a unique area for wildlife and flora that is now a sea of colour, due largely to the thousands of sunflowers that have been planted.
Martin Blakey, the Trust’s chief executive said that this particular piece of land was perfect for the creation of a dedicated wildlife site that would provide much need food to a wide variety of birds throughout the winter.
He said: “We really wanted to create something special with this site without disturbing the already flourishing environment, so we opted to plant a mixture of wild flowers and game cover that would create habitats as well as provide food. The sunflowers have large seed heads that can carry between 800 and 2000 seeds each which, will feeds hundreds of birds well in to the winter months.
“What we have in effect created is a 6 acre bird feeder, and the amount of wildlife that has been attracted to the site is incredible, so successful has it been that we are already planning something similar next spring for six of our other sites in the Church Fenton area.”
