Search for Renshaws

THE discovery of rugby winners’ medal at a house in Leeds has prompted a search in Selby district for relatives of the man it belonged to.

Bill Wharram, of Hambleton, is keen to trace anyone living in the area who is a descendant of a Mr R.Renshaw, who he believes was a resident in the district in the late 19th century.

“Mr Renshaw was a playing member of the original Selby Rugby Club, which disbanded about 110 years ago, and won a winners medal when Selby won the Hull Times Cup in 1885,” said Bill.

“Mr Renshaw’s medal came to light when a house in Leeds was being emptied following the death of a Mrs Richardson. Unfortunately the family know of no connection between the name of Renshaw and themselves but would like to give any Renshaw descendants the chance to have the medal.”

If anyone can help Bill with his search, contact the Selby Times on 01757 702198 or pop into our office at 74-76 Gowthorpe.
