Students at Queen Margarets in Escrick present York Playspace with a cheque totalling over 3,000 (L-R) Charlotte Smith (Year I), Lily Whitcombe (UVI), Alison Shepherd (York Playspace Manager) and Holly Moseley (Year I).

IT was a right royal gesture when Escrick’s Queen Margaret’s School donated over £3,000 to a children’s charity.

The cash was presented to York Playspace last Wednesday after the school’s pupils took part in a variety of fund-raising schemes.

The Playspace group exists to ‘provide and promote quality play opportunities for children and young people’ and it has been chosen as the school’s sponsored charity.

Funds raised by the school will be used to support the group’s popular Chill Out Zones which provide children and young people with opportunities to play, learn and socialise together.

The charity’s manager Alison Shepherd said she was grateful for the donation, adding that: “This donation will help to support the activities and provide warm, safe places for the children and young people who attend the Chill Out Zones in Moor Lane, Tang Hall and the 68 Centre.”

“It is a much needed contribution towards the running costs for another year.”

The school’s girls devised a number of creative avenues for fund-raising, all centred on last term’s school play, the Lionel Bart musical Oliver.

In addition to donations on the door, a number of local businesses provided gifts for a food, glorious food-themed prize draw and a Dickensian gala and champagne reception was held on the night of the final performance.

The school’s deputy headteacher, Carole Cameron, who co-ordinates the charity committee said: “The girls have shown tremendous dedication and effort in raising funds.

“One of Queen Margaret’s aims is to enable girls to engage confidently with their community.

“I am very pleased with their great success in this endeavour.”

Each year, Queen Margaret’s charity committee selects a charity to direct their fund-raising efforts towards. Last year it picked Revive, a charity fashion show which exceeded its £5,000 target.

In 2012 the cash was given to the Riverside Project, a group which is involved with the renovation and revitalisation of a derelict pub on Huntington Road into a community centre.
