BRAINBOXES from pubs across the district again gathered to pit their wits against one another in the 40th annual Selby Lions’ pub quiz on Friday.

The 12 pubs taking part were The Jolly Sailor in Cawood, Black Swan in Wistow, New Inn, Cliffe, Grey Horse, Kelfield, Black Dog, Camblesforth, Grey Horse, Brayton, Wheatsheaf, Burn, Greyhound, Riccall, The Fox, Thorpe Willoughby, George and Dragon, West Haddlesey, Wadkin Arms, Osgodby and Kellington Manor, Kellington.

Lions’ activity organiser, David Jones, said the quiz was again a “great success” with winners Black Dog receiving the winning trophy on the night achieving 83 points from their 100 questions answered in 30 minutes. Wheatsheaf in second place achieving 80 points, and third place George and Dragon, scoring 79 points.

He added: “Money raised from the night, which has still to be counted, will go to local good causes. Last year we raised about £900 and we are hoping to raise as much this year. Some of the cash, as usual, will pay for the senior citizens’ concert at the Railway Club in Selby.”

Abbey Travel in New Lane in Selby again provided their phone lines to enable Lions’ members to co-ordinate the scores as they came in from each of the pubs.

David Jones added: “I would like to thank Abbey Travel and everyone who took part. Once we have counted all the proceeds from the quiz, we will find out which pub has raised most money and the landlord there will also receive a trophy. Last year’s winners – Wheatsheaf at Burn – were only just pipped to first place.”
