Julius Falconer, from Monk Fryston, has written his 14th crime novel, A Figure in the Mist.

MONK Fryston Hall is the setting for a double murder in a book by the village’s resident crime writer Julius Falconer.

Readers will recognise descriptions of the 12th century manor house in his most recent 180-page novel, A Figure in the Mist.

Set in present day, Julius’s 14th novel tells the tale of amateur detective Tobias Walden who tries to find out the truth about his mother’s death.

“Unlike other writers including Agatha Christie, I allow the reader the same information as the detective so those reading are given the chance to solve the crime themselves,” he said.

He explained that in many of his novels, even he isn’t sure who carried out the crime until more than half way through the story.

Retired teacher Julius – now in his late 60s – turned his hand to crime writing in 2005 and works at about 1,000 words a day, sharing his time between his Milford Junction home and a house in France.

He added: “Plots just come into my head. There’s nothing autobiographical in them. Crime writing is in some ways the easiest form of writing as there’s less need for creativity. The crime takes places and then the writing is about the investigation that follows.”

Father-of-one Julius hopes he is carving out his own niche area of the crime genre, with elements of philosophy, religion and politics intertwined in his work.

He said: “I avoid gore. There’s no sex, violence or obscenity. There are also no “hard-boiled detectives” as the Americans might say.”

Julius (right) is also hoping to celebrate the release of a novel titled The Inspector Sees It Through, which is set in Selby and Lumby.

A Figure in the Mist is published on October 6 by Pneuma Springs and is available online and in Kindle format. Paperbacks are priced £7.99.
