Porter tipple ready to boost Selby town
THE weird and wonderful culture of Selby has been entertaining Edinburgh Fringe Festival crowds, with the town's pittancer spreading the word.
Cultured comedian Tim FitzHigham has been telling audiences throughout his show's run all about his appointment as pittancer of Selby.
His medieval post was given to him five years ago during a visit to perform at Selby Town Hall, and its quirkiness has proved to be a be a rich vein of humour.
But even Tim admits to being surprised when during one of his shows, Selby Town Council entertainment's officer Chris Jones presented him with a bottle of ale brewed in his honour.
Brown Cow Brewery, of Barlow, has produced Pittancer's Porter in recognition of Tim's work. His annual visits to the town involve paying the princely sum of 1 to the Selby Abbey vicar, and providing any wayward monks with cheese and eggs!
