Pope decision shocks region
NEWS: News.
CATHOLICS in the Selby area have expressed their shock at the announcement of Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to retire from the post.
The Pope said that he would be resigning after nearly eight years as the head of the Catholic Church because he was too old to continue at 85 years old.
Benedict became the first papal to resign in nearly 600 years and his announcement sent shockwaves throughout the world.
Father Anthony Wilson, of St Mary’s Church on Gowthorpe, says he was initially surprised when he heard the news.
He said: “Yes I was shocked. I, like everyone else, first heard it when I switched on the news.
“Nobody had an inkling he was going to make that decision but I take the view that it was a courageous decision and that he has made it for all the right reasons.
“He realised he felt that he could no longer fulfil certain roles associated with being Pope and for that he must be commended.”
