PICTURE GALLERY - National Playday fun in Selby

MORE than a thousand children and parents attended an exciting free fun session last week.

National Playday is the annual celebration of children's right to play.

Building on the success of last year's Selby event, Scott Road Community Centre played host to a variety of attractions on Wednesday between 11am and 3pm, including Animals In Tuition, Minster Falconry, a synthetic ice rink, bouncy castles, ceramic pot painting, hair braiding, sports activities and face painting.

The event was organised by Selby Extended Services in partnership with a multitude of other agencies, including Selby Community Investment Partner-ships, Groundwork, Selby Abbey Leisure Centre, police, the fire and rescue service, sports clubs, NYBEP, Selby Children's Centres and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

It was funded by Selby Extended Services, Extended Learning 4 All, Groundwork, Selby Children's Centres, United Biscuits and Sainsbury's.

Free refreshments, including juice, biscuits and fruit, were also served.

Extended services co-ordinator Lorraine Chambers said: "It was a huge success.

"We had more than a thousand people attend throughout the day – definitely more than last year.

"We have a feedback box where children can draw a happy or a sad face, depending on whether they've enjoyed themselves or not, and it was a universal hit.

"They also wrote some lovely comments. It seems the pottery was a particular favourite.

"The falconry display provided the 'wow' factor as birds swooped over people's heads. We'll definitely be looking to stage the event again next year."
