FUNDRAISER Emma Cook is taking a well-earned rest to finish off 2012, after a recent cycle tour helped raise a six-figure sum for charity.

Emma, from Barlby, took part in the ‘Cycle India 2012’ which consisted of ten days of touring through the remote areas of the country.

Emma and the rest of the 65-strong group of cyclists helped raise a whopping total of £889,000, which is still rising.

Emma’s cause is ‘Women v Cancer’ which is a series of women-only cycle challenges in aid of three charities.

The trip around India took in breathtaking sights and arduous stretches, but Emma says it was a hugely worthwhile experience due to the amount of money raised.

Speaking at a visit to Selby Community Primary school, where she was the subject of a class write-up, she said: “It was a fantastic experience, really enlightening and I took in some amazing places.

“I’ve got three friends recovering from cancer so that’s why I wanted to do something like this.”

Emma, 31, admits the 340km she cycled between October 27 and Novemeber 5, was doubly hard considering she hadn’t been on a bike in 15 years - but she was determined to finish the tour. She added: “There were times when I wanted to stop but I’d look at my phone and my friends would have been texting me with good luck messages so that’s when I knew I had to carry on.”

Emma, who works at Morrison’s in Selby, says that she is contemplating more charity treks in 2013 and would not rule out another bike-themed tour.

She said: “I’d definitely go back (to India) again, plus I’ve also looked at hiking in Peru and other sort of activities that raise money.”
