AN INTREPID adventurer will swap his day job as director of a nursery in Barkston Ash to brave sub-zero temperatures and raise cash for charity when he takes on the Yukon Arctic Ultra challenge next month.

On February 2 Karl Shield, 42, director at Rainbow Nursery School in London Road, will travel 430 miles pulling his sled with bed and provisions from the former goldrush town of White Horse to Dawson City in Yukon territory in Canada, prior to a husky race. Temperatures can reach minus 50 degrees centigrade.

He can regularly be seen in the early hours, between 4.30am and 5.30am, pulling his sled around Saxton, Barkston Ash and neighbouring villages, with two huge tyres attached to it, as he trains for the mammoth freezing challenge.

He said: “I’ve done this before and it is a daunting challenge. This is self-funded and costs hundreds of pounds. This time however I’m also raising money for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, which supports children with life-limiting and life threatening conditions. I’m hoping to raise at least £2,000.”

His wife Harriet, who runs the nursery with him, added: “I’ll miss not having Karl here during the race but this is for a good cause.”
