New town councillor
A MAN who has spent his working life dealing with the problems of students in York has taken up his first local authority role after becoming new town councillor for Selby North.
Craig Laskey, 30, of Norton Street, takes over from council stalwart Winnie May, of Flaxley Road, who retired from the seat, aged 88, after more than 30 years’ service.
Craig, who works as a student development officer, said the opportunity arose to become a councillor and he jumped at the chance. But he admitted filling Winnie’s shoes would be a tall order.
“This has all happened in the past two weeks. I am nervous but looking forward to the challenge.
“Winnie did a fantastic job over a long period of time and the things she did for the community are highly commendable. I only hope I can continue to serve the community just as well.”
The father of two (above) added: “I am looking forward to working with the other town councillors and will meet residents over the next few weeks.” (Craig Laskey 01) Picture: Nigel Booth
