Motorcyclist gets disqualified

A MOTORCYCLIST caught riding at 124mph at Newthorpe was trying to cure an engine misfire, Selby magistrates were told last Thursday.
Richard Garrad, 35, had originally denied speeding on the A63 on June 10, last year, but last week changed his plea, the day he was due to stand trial.
Disqualifying Garrad of Leeds for 56 days, magistrate Ian Franks said that the stretch of road was well known to the court as a place where motorcyclists speed. Adding that travelling at such excessive speed was dangerous to Garrad’s wellbeing and that of other road users, Mr Franks said that there had been many accidents and deaths on the roads because of motorcyclists speeding.
Anthony Sugare, mitigating, said that the not guilty plea had originally been entered because he and his client were under a misunderstanding. He said that almost everywhere else in the country a Notice of Intended Prosecution was sent out by the police to arrive in the post within 14 days. This had not happened in this case.
Garrad was said to be expecting to become a father of twins soon and that the loss of his licence would cause problems for his epileptic wife. He was fined £350 and ordered to pay costs of £250 and a victim surcharge of £15.
