BRAINBOXES from Sherburn High School put their numbers skills to the test when they were joined by their parents for a mathematics project.

Almost 70 parents of year seven students came back to school to work with their children on a series of mathematical puzzles. The annual Parent Student Project gives adults the chance to work alongside their child to find out what maths is really like at school.

This year’s activities included an introduction to algebra, building a cube from a series of blocks and a logic puzzle to find which person owned the crocodile!

An ongoing quiz throughout the morning allowed everyone to show their competitive side, too.

“The event was designed to give parents an insight into what goes on in Sherburn High’s maths classrooms in an informal and relaxed environment,” said James Brookes, the workshop’s organiser.

He added: “It was a delight to meet and work with so many parents and to see students and their parents doing maths together. This year’s attendees were the most enthusiastic yet.”

The enthusiastic response from students included: “I really enjoyed working with my parents and sharing our learning.”
