CARLTON villagers are shouting the odds about a proposal to close one of the village’s two pubs.

Pub giant Punch Taverns have lodged a planning application with Selby District Council to demolish the Odddfellows Arms and build eight homes on the site.

However Punch has said that the application is more a case of the group keeping its options open and there are no plans for the demolition to go ahead.

Locals are not convinced, and are furious that Punch did not consult them before submitting its application.

Kate MacKenzie, whose hairdressing salon is adjacent to the pub, said: “This could be very disruptive. Punch didn’t tell us anything about its plans before it put in the application – nor did they tell the 85-year-old lady who lives on the other side of the Odddfellows.

“I was only told last Thursday and now I’ve seen the plans they include building over my car parking spaces!

“My shop has an adjoining wall with the pub so there’s no way this isn’t going to affect us.

“No-one in the village knew anything about the plans and now we’ve only got until November 5 to object to them.”

A spokeswoman for Punch told the Selby Times: “We are pleased to confirm that The Odddfellows Arms is currently open and trading.

“Whilst it is our priority that our pubs continue to trade as pubs, in some circumstances it is necessary for us to explore alternative options. A tentative planning application, which is in the public domain, has been submitted and we await the outcome.”
