Jobs for the boys and girls
SELBY District Council has been helping young students gain valuable, first hand work skills and experience.
The authority is currently working with three recent university graduates to help them gain useful workplace skills. The placements take the total work experience placements offered to school pupils, university students and others entering the workplace to ten so far this year.
One post graduate student, Craig Nixon, is currently working in the Council’s policy department. He said, “I know competition for jobs is tough and I need to be able to show future employers that I have practical skills and real experience. This placement means that I can get the experience that I need to strengthen my job applications and to help me stand out from other applicants.”
Coun Gillian Ivey, SDC’s deputy leader, said: “Helping young people get the skills they need in the working world is really important. This is a great way of giving the next generation of workers the practical help they need to succeed in their chosen careers.
“The benefits are that students participating will have the opportunity to gain high quality experience of work that will help them find work when they need to.”
