A KIND-hearted teenager who is off to teach in Tanzania at the end of the month is clearly made of the ‘write’ stuff.

Jamie Mainds, 19, of Cowick, flies out to the African country on October 28 for five weeks – and he wants your help to take as many pens as possible with him to give to the children he meets.

The former Snaith School pupil said: “I am teaching in a school in a town called Iringa.

“My appeal is to take over as many pens as possible, so I would like to appeal to businesses – big and small – in our area to donate as many pens as possible for me to give to the school I am going to, as well as other schools in the area and orphanages.”

Once at the school, Jamie will teach a variety of subjects. He is also planning to tell youngsters all about his work with animals at Pollington-based Sam Safaris.

“I take animals out and about in Yorkshire, going into schools, residential homes and care centres and take pictures of them,

“I am taking these over with me and doing my very own Sam Safaris talk over in Iringa, educating the children on the animals we have here.

“They also may see some familiar faces such as the Tanzanian red-legged millipede, or the giant land snail, or the meerkats!”

If you can donate pens to Jamie, give him a call on 07432 650475, or call Helen at Sam Safaris on 01405 861175 or 07890 101830.

Meanwhile, Sam Safaris is holding a Hallowe’en open evening on October 27, 4pm-8pm, in aid of Noah’s Appeal – which is for Selby boy Noah Banks.

Sam Safaris owner Helen Duke said: “It is Hallowe’en and it will get children off the streets, and it is raising money for a good cause.

“It is also a chance for people to see the nocturnal animals we have.”

Fancy-dress is optional, and there will be crafts, animal handling, games and free refreshments.

It costs £1.50 for adults and £1 for children.
