Children could be put in danger, a concerned school headteacher said this week, if HGV’s continue to thunder through Barlby village while work to create a roundabout takes place.
Headteacher of Barlby High School, Martin Hannan, said HGV drivers were ignoring diversion signs and using the village as a rat run, which endangered children at his school and Barlby Primary at the beginning and end of the school day.
North Yorkshire County Council said the £1.8 million roundabout, currently being constructed at the A19/A63 junction at Barlby and Osgodby, was designed to improve safety at this notorious accident black spot.
Mr Hannan added: “I appreciate HGV’s are diverted a long way round while road works continue, but for the sake of student safety I urge them to comply and slow down. Please be aware of children especially at peak school times 9am and 3.30pm.”
An angry resident said: “It’s early on a Friday morning I find myself writing to you. Why? Because I have been woken up for the fourth time this week by HGVs thundering through the village, which starts at approximately 5am.”
An NYCC spokesman said: “The A19 carries over 33,000 vehicles along this stretch in a day and a roundabout at this very busy junction is designed to improve safety for right turners and also decrease speeds on the A19 to aid motorists coming from the A63 in Osgodby and Highfield View in Barlby.
The programme for the construction of the roundabout is set to last for 22 weeks with ten weeks of that time being a full road closure.
This was the preferred option after the county council carried out a full consultation with the local community and businesses. The county council and its partners, including North Yorkshire Police, are making every effort to ensure that diversion routes are used correctly and to prevent speeding.
“North Yorkshire Police continues to carry out speeding enforcement on the diversion route. NYCC will continue to monitor the effect of the closure so that disruption to local communities is kept to a minimum.”
