Helping youngsters into the workplace

SUPPORT for a national youth campaign has been pledged by Goole and Brigg MP Andrew Percy.

Leading youth work charity NYA is calling on MPs to spend an hour with local youth workers in their constituency, as part of Youth Work Week 2012 from November 5 to 12.

Mr Percy (pictured on a recent visit to Snaith School) said: “This is the kind of initiative I would be fully behind. On this occasion however my diary is full, but I continue to support any scheme which helps young people in my constituency. I recently spent time with East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Youth Services so I know of the important work they do. I am more than willing to visit youth centres.”

He added: “I continue to work with youth groups such as The Brownies, Guides, Cubs etc.”

Youth Work Week highlights the vital role youth work plays across the country, from sports and extra-curricular clubs like Brownies and Scouts, to mentoring young people with behavioural or health difficulties. But the NYA warns not everyone has access to these kinds of schemes; a situation that will worsen due to local authority budget cuts.

Chief executive of NYA, Fiona Blacke, said: “Youth workers provide an invaluable service to young people and the communities in which they live, whether formally, or on a voluntary basis. Yet budgets for youth work projects are being cut, at just the time when young people need them the most; earlier this year the number of those Not In Education, Employment or Training hit its highest level in a decade and young people have received a bad reputation following the riots in 2011.

“There is an amazing variety of youth work going on in communities, and we would like MPs to see the value first hand. If MPs spend just one hour observing their local youth services we know they will recognise the importance of the supportive and strong relationships which youth workers build with young people to prepare them for their adult lives.”
