SELBY District Council is asking residents for their comments on its financial plans, as the authority sets its budgets for the next year.

Information about the Council’s current financial position, as well as a review of plans for the future, is available via a link from the home page of the Council’s website. The Council is asking for people to comment on these plans, as part of the budget setting process over the coming weeks.

The consultation will run until February 1. You can email the Council via communications@selby.gov.uk, use Twitter or write to Budget Consultation, Civic Centre, Doncaster Road, Selby, YO8 9FT.

The authority says that the review shows it has been successful at delivering savings, but also recognises future budget pressures.

Around £1m of savings by SDC have been achieved in the last financial year.

However continuing cuts in central Government funding mean that tough decisions are needed to balance the books for next year and beyond.

Comments made by members of the public as part of this budget review will be considered by councillors as they set the spending plans for the next twelve months.

SDC leader coun Mark Crane (pictured), said, “We’ve achieved a lot over by working in new ways to deliver significant savings and we’ve had a lot of success.

“But the pressure remains. We expect to receive a lower amount of Council Tax income this year – that’s because of the changes to Council Tax benefit. From April this will be a discount rather than a benefit, which means that it comes directly off the income we collect.

“We also know it’s tough for everyone at the moment, with rising bills and inflation alongside the national economic outlook. We need to be mindful of all this in setting our budgets for next year.

“We’ve taken some bold decisions over the last 12 months which have enabled us to make savings without a detrimental impact on front line services.
