A HAIR raising experience left a barmaid with a close crop when she had her head shaved for charity.

It was a case of going, going, gone for Lora Barratt, 18, a waitress and barmaid at the Fox pub/restaurant in Thorpe Willoughby and she managed to raise £1,235 for the charity Breast Cancer Research, which looks into research and care of those affected by the condition.

The newly shorn teenager was inspired to have her locks lopped at the Fox Pub in Fox Lane, as her mum Pamela was given the all clear from breast cancer only 12 months ago after her own personal two-year battle against the condition.

Lora, of Clog Mill Gardens in Selby, previously had shoulder length hair she was very proud of.

Her mum came back to the area from her home in Cleethorpes so she could cut the teenager’s luscious locks herself.

Lora said: “I was pretty scared about having my hair chopped off but it was for such a good cause. I expected to raise about £250, but people were putting £5 each time in the pot so they could cut a piece of my hair and we managed to raise more than £1,000.”

The teenager, whose friends now refer to her as Sinead O’Connor, said she was also hoping to donate her hair to a wig manufacturer specialising in hairpieces for cancer victims.

She added: “I’m quite proud of myself and I certainly would do this again – it’s only hair at the end of the day. I’m still getting used to my new hairstyle but I’m hoping it grows back quite soon. This is the first time I’ve done anything like this and people say it really suits me. I’m quite proud of the fact that my mum intends to do a parachute jump for the charity.”

Landlady at the Fox, Christine Sample, said many could hardly watch the hair lopping as they knew how much Lora’s locks meant to her and the emotion of the occasion, with her mum cutting her hair, was too much for many.

She added: “Lora’s friends were going to do a parachute jump for the charity but had second thoughts about this and opted out. However, she wanted to do something and decided to have her hair cropped. She was so keen on her hair that I feel this is a huge gesture. It was a very emotional experience for everyone.”
