A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save one of Sherburn’s most historic buildings.
THE Old School at Kirkgate, a 1820s building, is currently an area office for North Yorkshire County Council’s social services department, but the office is due to close in January 2014 as part of the authority’s cost-cuttig measures, and the village’s Parish Council is hoping it can be put to good use for the people of Sherburn. Sources believe that NYCC will sell off the building when it becomes vacant.
Parish councillor Bob Packham (pictured) told the Selby Times: ““We are looking at the possibility of acquiring the freehold of the property and using it for the benefit of the parish. “We’d like to see it used for a community purpose – maybe as a community cafe or a youth facility – it seems a real possibility though at the moment we are at a very early stage.”
The Parish Council has set up a working group to look at the project, and initial discussions with NYCC have taken place.
“We’re also looking at having a structural survey carried out,” coun Packham continued. ““The capital costs should be alright but we are concerned that the cost of keeping a project running may be a hurdle.”
