A GOOLE soldier has been putting his life on the line for his country as part of a team dedicated to stopping rebels planting roadside bombs.

Trooper Jamie Simpson, 22, has helped track down and apprehended Taliban insurgents who were planting the bombs, which have claimed the lives of many soldiers.

He is part of the Light Dragoons cavalry regiment’s Formation Reconnaissance Squadron currently serving in Afghanistan.

The squadron patrols across the danger zone of Helmand and is out on the road for up to 25 days at a time, aiming to disrupt insurgents.

Tpr Simpson’s team acted on intelligence that bombers had planted an improvised explosive device on a road in the Upper Gereshk Valley.

They apprehended three suspects, whose hands tested positive for traces of explosives and the trio were taken into custody. Tpr Simpson, a former pupil at Vermuyden School and who joined the Army four years ago, said: “This is my first tour so far and I’m enjoying it.

“Managing to catch people like the bombers makes your job worthwhile.”

Tpr Simpson’s boss at the Light Dragoons is Regimental Sergeant Major David Rae, whose foster carer mother Jackie Patten, 57, and stepfather Ivor Patten, 53, also live in the Salisbury Avenue area of Goole.

Mr Rae, 38, who joined up 21 years ago, is helping to oversee the Light Dragoons’ work across Afghanistan.
