Ginger business is beyond pale
Jess Shailes and her mum Jen Rose have launched Everything for Redheads, an online business that sells products for people with red hair.
A PROUD ginger nut from Goole has launched an online business alongside her mum that celebrates everything that is great about having red hair.
Jess Shailes, 27, and Jen Rose are the brains behind Everything for Redheads, which stocks hair products and make-up designed specifically for people with red hair and pale skin.
The business was borne out of the pair being fed up with the stereotyping of redheads and a lack of products for carrot-tops.
And it is going from strength to strength, with inquiries coming in from as far afield as America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Jess, a natural redhead like her mum, said: “We wanted somewhere people with red hair, or their families, could go to share problems and be part of a community which, until now, they have not been able to do as people perceive them as different.”
That perception stretches back to Jess and Jen’s school days, when both suffered bullying because they had red hair. They still get negative comments now.
“People think that because you have red hair it is okay to make fun of you and say things,” said Jess.
“Just the other day I was at the petrol station and some men shouted out ‘ginger’. It seems that it is socially acceptable to have a go at a redhead.
“I love my hair now but as I was growing up there were many occasions when all I wanted was blonde or brown hair.”
The idea for Everything for Redheads came from Jen moaning at her husband and Jess about there being no products on the high street for redheads.
They suggested doing something about it — and the business was born.
Jen, 57, said: “For years I had used the same shampoo which was designed to enhance red hair.
“Then suddenly they stopped making it. I was furious as there just isn’t anything out there on the high street for redheads.”
