IT WAS far from the sweet smell of success when beekeeper Paul Snowden spotted that his insects were producing funny honey!
Paul (above), the owner of Yorkshire Beehives, had been as concerned as he colleagues in the beekeeping world, after the year’s poor weather left his charges struggling for sustenance.
However, when they discovered a supply of mint fondant to feed on, it was far from a sweet treat for honey monsters!
“At first I thought they were feeding off heather nectar, but then I found it wasn’t quite right,” said the Riccall based businessman. “Then I found that there was a plant half a mile away that processes chocolate waste into animal feed and that’s where they’d been picking up the mint fondant. “
But the honey produced was far from pleasing to the palate. “It couldn’t be used,” Paul said. “At first it had quite a nice mint taste, but after the sweetness faded it had a sharp metallic taste which was quite unpleasant.
“We had to feed it back to the bees, though as we do feed them fondant in the winter, at least they were used to it!” (Buy this photo) Picture: Tony Saxton
