Flood Chaos in Selby and Cawood

SOME of the worst flooding in North Yorkshire for ten years has seen Selby District suffer as rivers swell and buildings are swamped with water.
But the Environment Agency has assured people that the worst is over and waters will now subside.
As part of a multi-agency effort, North Yorkshire County Council teams have been working around the clock across affected areas of the county to ensure that any disruption to services is kept at an absolute minimum across communities.
Any schools that were closed at the beginning of the week due to flooding have now re-opened or have been temporarily relocated so that children’s education can continue.
In Cawood the Swing Bridge is expected to be closed throughout the weekend (September 29 and 30). An EA spokesman said flood defences in Cawood have and should continue to hold back flood water. And flood defences in Selby have easily contained the Ouse through the town.
He added: “River levels on the Ouse will remain high throughout the weekend, but these levels will eventually get back to normal. Because Selby is tidal river levels will remain high, but any risk is quickly diminishing.”
Selby Bypass swing bridge is scheduled to be closed on October 6 and 7 for maintenance works. This will be from 6am on Saturday to 8pm on Sunday. The bridge team’s annual descent training due to take place on Saturday (September 29) has had to be postponed due to flood risk.
The county council’s Health and Adult Service is working closely with the district councils, private domiciliary care agencies, vulnerable adults and their families so that people continue to be well cared for. Teams have carried out several successful evacuations of vulnerable residents in flooded areas and remain on standby so that all those in need of help during the crisis will receive it.
County Councillor John Weighell, North Yorkshire’s Leader said: “We have made every effort to protect residents in affected areas and to maintain our services and we will continue to do so until the flood waters fully subside. We would like to extend our thanks to our communities and volunteers across the county who have helped with practical issues such as sandbagging and have kept a watchful eye on vulnerable neighbours.”
