GOOLE and Brigg MP Andrew Percy has met with Paul Stevens, Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s community resilience manager, to discuss the establishment of a Community First Responder Scheme covering Goole, Old Goole, Airmyn and Hook.

Andrew has agreed to lead the First Responder Scheme locally, and the plans see local volunteers trained by Yorkshire Ambulance Service to deliver life-saving care locally.

As authorised volunteers for the ambulance service, volunteers work as part of a dedicated team whose aim it is to reduce the number of pre-hospital deaths in Yorkshire.

In many medical emergencies, the first few minutes are critical and if effective treatment can be provided within that time, lives can be saved.

Volunteers will be trained by YAS in basic life support skills, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, the use of an automatic external defibrillator and the administration of oxygen.

When a 999 call is received by YAS, an ambulance response is dispatched. At the same time, a Community First Responder, on call in the area, can be alerted and asked to assist to ensure help reaches the patient as quickly as possible. Volunteers are never sent into dangerous situations.

YAS will be holding a recruitment evening on Wednesday August 22 between 7 and 9pm at The Courtyard, Goole. Anyone interested is invited to come along or contact the YAS community first responder trainer Ben Rushworth on 07920 490820 or by email at Ben.Rushworth@yas.nhs.uk

Mr Percy said: “I have already found a number of volunteers to support this scheme but we really need more. Myself and some of my staff will be getting trained to be First Responders and the office on Pasture Road in Goole will provide an excellent base for this scheme.

“YAS has recently put more resources into the town but this scheme is an excellent way of supporting the service further. Time is critical in getting to patients and so schemes such as this really can make the difference between life and death.

“I would urge anyone interested in volunteering to come along to the recruitment evening to find out more.”
