Fines for urinating in Selby streets

SELBY District Council’s bylaw to protect against late night antisocial behaviour continues to have an impact, with further prosecutions made this week (Tuesday January 31) against those found to be urinating in the street.

The bylaw was introduced last year in direct response to concerns raised by local residents and businesses, who were faced with clearing-up after Friday and Saturday night revellers. The bylaw has supported the police and local Night Marshals to take on-the-spot action to deal with people found to be urinating in the street following a night out. Under the bylaw, anyone caught doing this is liable to a fine of up to £500.

On Tuesday 31 January, 19 cases were heard at Selby Magistrates Court.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Mark Crane, said, “We introduced the bylaw as a direct help to our town centre residents and businesses. We’re certainly not against people having a good time, but there needs to be some responsibility too – we don’t expect others to have to deal with the aftermath of a mindless few.

“The bylaw gives important powers to the police and Night Marshals to protect the local area.

“Following its successful implementation here in the Selby district, councils from other parts of the country are looking at whether they could put in place similar laws for their own areas – once again showing that Selby is leading the way.”
