IT is a race against time as preparations are racing ahead for a special final church service at The Priory on Sunday for Canon Cyril Roberts.

Canon Roberts said work was almost complete on the church in Market Place and he was confident it would be completed in time for the service and celebration from 5pm.

He said he was looking forward to seeing so many friends but he felt it would be highly emotional after 26 years at the Priory.

He added: “It’s so strange to be having a final service. I know so many people here and I aim to keep in touch with them. In attendance will be the Rt Rev Peter Burrows, of Doncaster. After the service there will be a celebration and we will have the chance to sample a beer ‘Canon’s Ball’ that’s been brewed in my honour by The Old Mill Brewery in Snaith.”

A personal tribute has also been paid to Canon Roberts by East Riding of Yorkshire councillor John Barrett who said he counted both Canon Roberts and his wife Enid as “true friends”.

He added: “It is with sad regret that I will be away for Cyril’s farewell service. I have only really got to know Cyril and his wife Enid over the past few years. I count them as true friends, not just to myself but to the community they have served. If any people deserve a long and happy retirement it is them.”

He said he had enjoyed Cyril’s services and had always given thought to what he would say, and he further added: “I shall very much miss the chats with Cyril in his back Office at his home. He is very much a down to earth intellectual and is a font of all types of knowledge. I have always enjoyed and listened to his counsel, which has been good for me.”
