Fair way to recruit for two major projects

RECRUITERS at next month’s Selby Jobs Fair could be on the lookout to sign-up hundreds of workers to two major projects in the region.

Selby residents could have the chance to show their interest in working on the York Potash scheme in the North York Moors and on the Knottingley Power Project.

Former miners are among those that recruiters for the two schemes may be interested in getting on board if they come to the fair at Selby College next month.

Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, explained that employers for both projects would be attending the second Selby District Jobs Fair, which he has organised for October 4.

He said: “These employers will eventually be looking to recruit for hundreds of jobs. This is a chance for them to make contact with potential employees.

“Anyone interested will be able to go along to the jobs fair and register their interest and find out more about what might be available.”

The York Potash Scheme would see a 1,500-metre mine sunk near Whitby, which would tunnel outwards and pump polyhalite underground around 30 miles north to Teesside, where it would be processed to make fertiliser.

The project is expected to create about 600 construction jobs from next year as well as about 1,000 jobs once mining work begins.

Sirius Minerals, the company behind the scheme, is one of 30 firms who have already committed to coming to the jobs fair, along with representatives from the Knottingley Power Project, – a proposed project for a major new power station.

Mr Adams added: “Many people found jobs and training last year via the event and with unemployment currently going down I want to make sure that we continue to build on that success.”

An application form is also available on the website for employers to apply for the chance to exhibit at the fair free-of-charge.
