MP Andrew Percy is celebrating after Ministers confirmed funding for disadvantaged pupils in the Brigg and Goole constituency totalled over £2 million in the two years since the Government introduced the scheme. Provisional figures suggest the funding is set to double over the next year.
The ‘Pupil Premium’ was introduced by the current government in 2011 and is provided to schools which have pupils known to be eligible for free school meals (Deprivation Premium); children in care who have been continuously looked after for at least six months (Looked After Child Premium); and children whose parents are serving in the armed forces (Service Child Premium).
During 2011-12, the Deprivation and Service Child Premium attracted £645,000 for 1,340 eligible pupils. In 2012-13 this figure increased to £1,380,000 for 2,240 eligible pupils. The Looked After Child Premium is not recorded at constituency level.
Government are to increase this premium. Provisional estimates indicate it will be worth nearly £2 million a year for Brigg and Goole schools.
Mr Percy said: “Education is something I passionately believe in. I campaigned heavily for the introduction of the Pupil Premium so I’m pleased it’s attracting large amounts of money to schools in our area to help support disadvantaged pupils and help bridge the attainment gap.”
