PROTEST: Coun John Barrett (above and right) asking East Riding of Yorkshire Highways to remove barrier blocking M62 access.

A LEADING Snaith councillor is urging East Riding of Yorkshire Highways officers to remove a barrier preventing access to the M62 saying it is adding precious minutes to journeys made by emergency services.

Snaith councillor John Barrett said the barrier at Long Lane in Pollington is blocking a vital emergency entrance to the M62 and lives couold be lost if it is not removed.

He added: “I contacted the Highways agency who told me they had consulted Fire services who said it was okay to put the barrier accross.

He said : “They said they had concerns regarding the barrier. They added that in an emergency, time taken to get to a scene could mean the difference between life and death if there was a large scale collision, or an incident as there was the other week when there was a chemical spillage on the motorway. And they further added that spillages of this nature in the past had caused loss of life depending on the chemicals carried.”

A spokesman for Snaith Fire Service said the journey took a lot longer if they were unable to use the emergency slip road and added: “The station was never involved with the decision of the closure and we would like you to take this matter further.”
