East Riding of Yorkshire Council preparing for weekend operations with blizzard conditions forecast for the county

EAST Riding of Yorkshire Council will continue to operate around the clock over the coming days and has put operational plans in place for the weekend, with heavy snowfall forecast by the Met Office across the area on Friday and potentially on Sunday and Monday.
Blizzard conditions, sub-zero temperatures and drifting are likely to cause hazardous driving conditions and the council is strongly advising motorists to only take essential journeys, drive to the conditions, plan journeys in advance to allow extra time and stay to the main treated network, wherever possible.
Salt stocks at the council’s barns remain healthy and orders are in place to replenish these as they are used. The council is also refilling salt bins and depositing salt piles for use by residents.
Gritters are continuing to treat the East Riding’s precautionary and secondary networks and staff from grounds and street-sweeping have been diverted to snow and ice clearing operations in high-pedestrian areas.
Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services, said: “Forecasts are indicating that between 10 and 20cm of snow could fall tomorrow and over the weekend in the East Riding and the council is putting plans in place to ensure the main highways stay open.
“The council continues to take stock of salt and is refilling salt bins and depositing salt piles at strategic locations around the East Riding for use by residents.
“The council advises motorists to only make essential journeys and to drive to the conditions, allow extra time for journeys and stay to the treated network, wherever possible.
“On minor roads, conditions will remain treacherous and the council continues to speak with town and parish councils to enact their winter plans and help alleviate problems locally.
“During this spell of winter weather, the council asks that residents ensure family, friends and neighbours, particularly older and more vulnerable people, stay safe and warm and have necessary provisions.”
