Controversial circus returns

A CIRCUS, whose last visit to the area made national headlines, has returned to Selby district.

When Jolly’s Circus, one of the few circuses in the UK to still use animals in its show, visited Howden in July 2006, it hit the headlines when Sparky the clown, real name Stanley Thompson, from Whitehaven, drove his car towards a group of animal rights protesters, knocking into one of them.
