CALLS are being made to spruce up certain areas on the fringes of Selby after complaints of fly-tipping and build-up of rubbish.
As our pictures show, former Abbey Leisure Centre on Scott Road and unoccupied Focus Do It All on Bawtry Road have dilapidated recently.
Both sites are now unused, despite interest from potential tenants or buyers.
Selby chamber town centre spokesman Richard Schofield said the run-down look of both sites will almost certainly put off potential tenants or buyers.
He said: “If there’s a chance that there might be someone prepared to rent the space then surely the landowner has a duty to keep it clean and tidy.
“In the case of Focus they have now moved out of town but they still have a responsibility to Selby, to keep the site clean. If you’re selling your house you wouldn’t let it become untidy so how is this different?”
Coun Michael Dyson, who conducted an audit recently on Selby town centre, said he will push for the two areas to be assessed shortly.
He said: “We did an audit of the town centre area recently and it came back that there had been more than 40 improvements or changes made.
“I’ll be looking into these two areas for future improvements to be made to the look and upkeep of them. It’s certainly an issue that needs addressing.”
