Child poverty figures ‘worry’
NEWS: News.
A campaigning group has called for more Government-led action on child poverty, after the latest figures were revealed.
In a national study led by the Campaign To End Child Poverty, numbers show that ten per cent of children in Selby are living in poverty.
Despite that figure being well below the national average - 20 per cent - it is still cause for concern according to the chair of the group, Enver Solomon.
He said: “There are still far too many children whose parents are struggling to make a living and are having to go hungry and miss out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.
“In Yorkshire and the Humber, the huge disparities that exist across the region are becoming more entrenched and are now an enduring reality as many more children are set to become trapped in long-term poverty and disadvantage.
“We’re calling on authorities to prioritise low-income families in the decisions they make about local welfare spending, including spending on the new council tax benefit and on protecting families hit by the bedroom tax.”
The figures for Selby and elsewhere in the region are low compared to other local authorities.
Tower Hamlets in London have 42 per cent of children living in poverty whilst Manchester and Middlesbrough have levels of 38 and 37 per cent respectively.
