GOOLE MP Andrew Percy is celebrating campaign success following the government’s agreement to include financial education in the National Curriculum.
Mr Percy launched the campaign in March 2011 by chairing an inquiry made up of seven MPs and backed by the 225 MP strong All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People.
Last week the Department for Education announced that financial education would be a compulsory part of the curriculum in both mathematics and citizenship at both Key Stage 3 and 4 (11-16 year olds) which is what the inquiry recommended.
The MP’s report was supported and endorsed by Carole Vorderman and Martin Lewis of Money Saving Expert.
Mr Percy said: “This is fantastic news. We made clear in that report that we felt young people should be properly equipped through financial education with the skills to enable them to make informed decisions.
“Debt is a part of life and not all debt is bad. However, too many people lack the skills to judge between necessary debt and bad debt.”
