Demolition work at Abbey Leisure Centre is already underway, after Selby District Council announced a timeline of events.

Earlier this month (February 18) saw work commence on the site where fire ripped through the building in February of last year.

On-site surveys were completed, assessments finalised, sub contractors mobilised and utilities were disconnected in what was the first stage of a long process that will eventually see a new centre take its place.

Neighbouring properties on the Scott Road site were also informed at this point.

Then, earlier this week, hoardings were erected which signalled the start of the “soft strip” process.

Doors, windows, fixtures and fittings that survived the fire are all set to be ripped out in preparation for the “hard strip” demolition, which is expected to begin next Monday (March 4).

SDC announced recently that the new centre, which will provide a larger gym, health and fitness suite and multi-purpose activity hall, will have an estimated completion time of two years.
