Celebrations for local companies
TWO companies with significant Sherburn sites are celebrating super news.
Pork processor Cranswick is in the pink after reporting “strong” trading in the third quarter, despite pig prices reaching “record levels” in December. The company said turnover in the three months to December 31 was seven per cent ahead year-on-year as its sales volumes continue to grow.
Cranswick added that it had achieved record production from its Sherburn base following investment in the plant.
A spokesman for Cranswick said: “The business has a well invested asset base, loyal and skilled teams, a great range of products and a strong financial position. The board looks forward positively to the rest of the year and the long term development of Cranswick.”
Bus maker Optare is feeling more than fare following the announcement that it has secured a significant order from transport giant Stagecoach.
The company has won a £3.3m contract to supply bus operators Stagecoach with a mix of 33 Solo and Versa – that weigh relatively little, saving on fuel costs – buses, to be delivered later this year.
Chris Wise, the company’s commercial director, said: “This repeat order results from the good reliability, fuel efficiency, and both driver and passenger acceptance of this and its predecessor model in a variety of demanding operating conditions.”
Optare has recently consolidated its operations from former sites in Rotherham, Crossgates and Blackburn at its new 140,000 sq ft Sherburn base.
Altogether, the company employs around 430 people.
Optare also continues to invest low carbon technology through the green bus fund.
