Career put on hold for ‘idiocy’

A MAN whose “idiocy” led to him changing his habits and driving after drinking is now having to put his career on hold.
Luke Durham, who works in retail and the York Designer Centre, was being asked to undertake training work and be involved in opening new stores for his employers around the country and abroad.
However, after pleading guilty last Thursday to drink/driving, the 24-year-old, of Sycamore Road, Barlby, will not be able to fulfil these extra obligations for several months, Selby magistrates were told.
Jane Chadwick, prosecuting, told how police officers saw Durham’s car being driven erratically on the A63 at Osgodby in the early hours of Sunday, January 20. They followed the car into Highfield View, Barlby and caused it to stop, Durham later being found to have an alcohol reading in breath of 74mcg - more than twice the legal driving limit of 35mcg.
Keith Haggerty, mitigating, said that his client, in his own word, said his actions were “idiocy”, adding that he would never normally drink and drive, but on this particular night one drink led to another.
Durham was banned from driving for 18 months and fined £260 and ordered to pay both £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
