Canal life on CD
TALES of the life of a Selby bargeman could be about to hit the record charts!
Laurie Dews’ book, The Story of a River Bargeman, has been recorded on CD and is on sale now.
The recording project started last November, when Laurie was asked to tell his tales to the Selebians at the Railway Social Club – his dry wit and ribald bargemen’s songs went down so well that it was said that it was a pity that his performance hadn’t been recorded.
Now, almost a year later, David Lewis, who was formerly Selby’s hidden heritage officer, has worked with Laurie and local producer Chris Miley of Strange Reality Music to make a CD of the tales and the songs.
As Laurie recalls: “It was hard physical work in those days. You had to empty your cargo of 200 tons of grain just by muscle and shovel power. It’d take you a day to clear your hold.”
David Lewis said: “To hear Laurie’s stories in that slow, lilting Selby brogue brings them properly to life. It’s a powerful reminder of the times when Selby had many industries such as shipping in which men had to endure hard physical work, but took a pride in comradeship and seeing a job well done.”
The CD contains 17 tales and five songs, along with a 16-page booklet with photos. It’s available for £6 from the Selby Times office.
