Police are on high alert in Sherburn after a robbery at a bookmakers preceded a number of burglaries in the area.
The Betfred branch on Low Street was targeted last Friday night at about 8.30pm when a man threatened staff with a wooden stick before making off on foot with an amount of cash.
Police say no-one was harmed in the incident but staff members were left “shocked and upset.”
Extensive police enquiries were carried out over the weekend to locate the suspect and a 38-year old man was arrested in Sherburn last Sunday.
Following questioning in custody, he was released on police bail pending further investigation.
Betfred yesterday released a comment saying: “The security of our staff and customers is paramount and we are working with the police on their investigation.”
Officers are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for public assistance.
The incident was the start of a crime-laden weekend for the area with a spate of break-ins occurring.
Officers are asking property owners to be extra vigilant after a two-in-one burglary at a property in Wolsey Croft on Saturday evening.
Over £3,000 worth of jewellery and electricals were taken, along with a VW van that was parked in the drive.
On the same evening a house in Pasture View was broken into, where four items of distinctive jewellery were taken.
After breaking in through a UPVC rear door, thieves made off with a man’s TAG watch and two Gucci men’s and women’s watches, all carrying a distinctive Dubai stamp of authenticity.
The weekend also saw three incidents of attempted break-ins occur in Sherburn, with Wolsey Croft and Wolsey Court being targeted overnight.
Police reported three properties that had no entry gained but where damage had been done.
Police are asking residents to keep all doors and windows secure, and be mindful of any suspicious people or activity in the area.
Anybody with information on any of the incidents is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Selby CID.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
