THE WOMAN who has been threatened with court action by a debt collection agency over a book she claims she never even ordered, has been told not to give up her fight.
The message of support comes from an unusual source — bailiff firm boss Tony Pycroft, of Gateforth.
Tony, who runs Julious Bailiffs, which has contracts with local councils throughout the UK, says that Linda Laverack, 59, of Flaxley Road, Selby, should stick to her guns and not be intimidated by a letter she has received from a debt collection agency.
Tony said: “Linda has nothing to fear. If she did not order the book, she will not be liable.”
He added says: “In this case the advice would be to let the debt collection agency take her to court as she will then have an opportunity to explain things to the judge.”
Linda told exclusively in Selby Times how she received a parcel from Reader’s Digest containing a book she did not ask for.
She says she sent the book back, incurring £6.50 postage charges but then received a letter from Reader’s Digest saying she owed £26.99 for the book and £5 for the letter.
Linda says she phoned the company, explained she had returned the book but then got a letter from a debt collection agency threatening court action.
Tony said the debt collection agency would be unlikely to pursue the matter to court for such a small amount.
And he added: “The simple thing is that the vast majority of people who get these letters pay it as they don’t want the hassle.”
Tony, who went to Holy Family School in Carlton, continued: “Speaking generally, people who know they are in the right should not be intimidated.
“There have been instances in the past where debt collection agencies send out these letters knowing that some people will get scared and pay up even if they have done nothing wrong — it’s a numbers game to these agencies.”
Reader’s Digest declined to comment on Linda’s case when asked by Selby Times.
