As opposition to the HS2 high speed rail link gathers pace in towns and villages along its route objectors in Church Fenton are also stepping up their campaign plans.

On Sunday co-ordinator of Church Fenton says No! action group, Jo Mason, said the campaign team joined other objectors in Swillington to support their drive to stop HS2 coming through their village.

She said the meeting in Swillington was addressed by Conservative MP for Elmet and Rothwell Alec Shellbrooke who showed his support for the scheme, but said he would support constituents in getting the rail plans re-routed.

Mrs Mason said: “Lots of people were at the meeting, which showed the strength of feeling against high speed rail plans. Mr Shellbrooke said he would strive to get the rail track plans re-routed, but constituents in the area, just like us in Church Fenton, don’t want the HS2 rail link at all and they made their feelings clear.”

She added: “We are now starting to join with other groups along the route also objecting to this and things are gathering momentum. The latest opposition group we have made contact with is Swillington, Oulton and Wodelsford Against HS2 group and we are endeavouring to contact others.

“We are striving to present a united front to these plans and keep up the pressure on government, which seems intent on railroading them through.”

She said a meeting with officers from Selby Distrrict Council and North Yorkshire County Council was being arranged to garner further support by linking the two council’s in with others to increase pressure on government.

She further added: “It seems millions of pounds are being wasted by government in PR for this scheme, which could be otherwise spent on more important things such as investment in flood defences and other infra structure projects.

“This seems like one humungous waste of time and money for something no one wants.
“Spend the cash elsewhere!”
