Abbey Leisure Centre demolition work to start

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

Demolition of the Abbey Leisure Centre is to begin shortly, with plans for a replacement building being confirmed by Selby District Council.

The centre which was destroyed by a fire in February last year is set to be replaced by an improved leisure facility which is estimated at two years completion time.

The Council has asked Sport England to contribute £2m towards the costs of the new centre which will provide a larger gym, health and fitness suite, multi-purpose activity hall, fitness studio and a new outdoor all weather sports pitch.

Coun leader Mark Crane says the new facility will be a huge boost for the area. He said: “The start of the demolition work is the first step on the road to delivering fantastic new facilities for our residents.

“We know the loss of the swimming facilities has been particularly difficult for our residents and we want them to see that progress is being made and we will deliver brand new first-class leisure facilities for the district.

“The new leisure centre will be better suited to people’s needs.

“We want the new leisure centre to be a real focus for the whole community - this won’t just benefit Selby town; having this new facility on the doorstep will benefit people from across the district. It will be a real draw for the area.”

At present Selby residents are having to use Profiles Gym, on Portholme Crescent as an alternative facility.

A photo call of the Leisure Centre, situated on Scott Road, which was pencilled in earlier this week was suddenly postponed.

SDC says the event was shelved due to “the building being unsafe for visitors at present.”
