ART is coming to the heart of South Milford.
Plans are in place to create a £200,000 arts venue in the Methodist Chapel, and the place of worship could soon see theatre and music performances in the aisles!
Peter Jackson is one of the group who are hoping that performance will soon take its place alongside prayer.
“The Chapel would remain as a place of worship,” he said. “But really it’s a great building for the community and, at present, it only gets used for an hour a week, which is a real shame.
“It’s a great big open space and we just want to see it put to better use.”
The group plan to take out the chapel’s pews, create a removable stage for the front of the room, refurbish the kitchen and build a new toilet block.
“What we really want to do is encourage people to use the building more and it also gives the church a chance to reach out to the community,” Peter said. “Of course it’s early days yet and we’re just trying to raise the money to make it possible – the initial price we were given was £150,000 but I think £200,000 is a more realistic figure.
“We’re running a series of fundraising concerts as part of our drive to raise the cash. We’ve already had shows by the Milford Brass Band, Castleford Young Musicians and the Northern Comfort barbershop singers.”
*The latest in the series of concerts takes place on Monday. St Mary’s Theatre Group from Batley are presenting a night of music hall. Tickets for the show, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £5.
