Horse meat discovered in supermarket burgers

TRACES of horse meat have been found in burgers that were on sale in national supermarkets.

The Dalepak plant in Hambleton, North Yorkshire is under fire after some of its beef burger products tested positive for low levels of horse DNA, as did two other plants in Ireland.

The plant stocks beef products to some of the largest supermarkets in Britain, and tests carried out showed that Tesco’s Everyday Value Beef Burgers were made up of 30 percent of horse meat, whilst other stores including Lidl and Aldi were also found to have stocked beef products that also tested positive.

A spokesperson from Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said there is no health risk but also no reasonable explanation for such traces to be found.

Tesco released a statement saying: “We are working with the authorities in Ireland and the UK and with the supplier concerned, to urgently understand how this has happened and how to ensure it does not happen again.”
