A FULL REVIEW is to be conducted into the controversial plans to close a vital children’s heart unit.

The Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt has announced that he has accepted the judgement of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel that a full review of the proposal to shut down the children’s cardiac services at Leeds General Infirmary is warranted.

Campaigning Hemingbrough mother Rebecca Storm says the review is a step in the right direction for the unit’s fight to stay open.

Rebecca, whose two-year-old son Vaughan has had three lifesaving operations at the West Yorkshire hospital, said: “This is an excellent move.

“It shows that people high up in government believe the original decision (to close Leeds) was flawed.

“I personally don’t see how they could justify shutting the unit when it serves so many patients.

“I think it’s (review) a positive step and hopefully they will end up reversing the decision.”

North Yorkshire County Councillor Jim Clark agreed with Rebecca that the closure would have hugely adverse effects.

He said: “I welcome this response to our appeal. This is a tremendous step forward in our fight to save this essential service for the people of the Yorkshire and Humber region.

“The closure of the LGI’s child cardiac service would be wholly unacceptable to the thousands of people across the region who need and deserve the best health service possible.”

Meanwhile, this weekend sees Rebecca continue her fundraising events.

Saturday sees the draw for the Christmas raffle with all funds being donated towards the Unit.

A recent craft fair at Hemingbrough Methodist Church Hall raised £345, whilst ticket sales for this week’s raffle have bumped the total up to £475.

Tickets can be purchased up until tomorrow from the Selby Times offices with the draw taking place Saturday at Londis in Hemingbrough.
