Tribute to tragic ’copter pilot
Peter Barnes, who was a former polit for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service.
A SHERBURN aviation expert has paid tribute to the pilot killed in an horrific helicopter crash in London last Wednesday.
Captain Peter Barnes (above), 50, died when his craft spun out of control and crash landed after clipping a crane on top of a building in the capital.
He was a former Yorkshire Air Ambulance captain whose stunt flying had featured in a Bond film.
Speaking to the Selby Times, Robert Hields of Hields Aviation, which is based at Sherburn Airfield, said he had known Peter for around 20 years and he would be sadly missed in flying circles.
“It’s a very close knit society that we work in so I have known Peter for a number of years,” said Mr Hields.
“He was flying for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance for quite some time but he worked for a helicopter company and as I bought aircraft you get to know people in the same business.
“He was a very well respected pilot.”
Following the crash, six others were taken to hospital for injuries, including a broken leg, and paramedics treated seven more casualties at the scene.
Captain Barnes, who was born in Nottingham and lived near Reading, logged more than 10,500 flying hours in his 25-year career.
He had worked as a stunt pilot on blockbusters including the 2002 Bond film Die Another Day, Saving Private Ryan and Tomb Raider II.
His TV filming credits included the 2012 London Olympics, 2004 Athens Games and the popular BBC show Coast.
