Sheffield residents ready to move into Park Hill

PEOPLE will begin to move back into Park Hill next week after the first phase of the massive regeneration project was completed.
The complex – loved and loathed in equal measure – is in the midst of a £160 million revamp, part-funded by £40m of public money.
Developer Urban Splash has now finished work on the first block to be regenerated, which overlooks Park Square roundabout and Ponds Forge.
The milestone has been reached eight years after work on the project began.
Among the new residents is Caroline Fletcher, a social historian at Sheffield University, who has bought a £120,000 two-bedroom apartment.
She said: “I put details of the flat on Facebook and some of my friends who know Sheffield said, ‘you’re not seriously going to live there?’. There was a bit of banter about gentrification.”
Another new resident, Charlie Johnson, 22, training to become a junior doctor, is moving into a three-bedroom flat after choosing Park Hill because of the spaciousness of the homes.
He said: “I looked at a lot of modern flats and they all seemed very boxy, almost like slightly posher student halls.
“This is different, it’s spacious and well-designed.”
Other residents said they felt they were ‘pioneers’ in becoming the first to move into the revamped apartments.
Kathleen Price, 64, and husband David, 67, from Doncaster, have sold their three-bedroom house for a one-bedroom flat at Park Hill.
Kathleen said: “It does feel a bit like we are pioneers. Where we used to live there isn’t the kind of neighbourly feel as there once was.
“I’d love to think that Park Hill could have that sense of community again.”
The flats are one of few examples of brutalist architecture still standing, and grade II* listed.
Some of the new flats in the first revamped phase will be let through a housing association, while others are available under shared ownership schemes.
